Unbelievable! Lindsay Lohan returns and steals the show in the sequel to Freaky Friday after 20 years.

Yesterday, I had the chance to watch Another Freaky Friday, the sequel to the beloved classic Freaky Friday—that movie so many of us grew up watching and loving during our childhood and teenage years in the late ’90s and early 2000s. Seeing this continuation more than 20 years later stirred up a lot of expectations—or rather, doubts.

I’ll admit I went in with low expectations. I thought it would be just another sequel like Enchanted 2 or Hocus Pocus 2—an attempt to revive past icons purely for nostalgia, without much else to offer. But I was pleasantly surprised. This sequel delivers, and it does it well.

First, Jamie Lee Curtis deserves a huge mention. She once again shines with an impressive performance. Comparing the 2003 original to this new version, you can see how Jamie has refined her craft and genuinely enjoys playing this role. She completely owns her scenes, lifting up everyone she shares the screen with. She’s like the Messi of acting: wherever she’s in frame, everything gets better.

Of course, it’s impossible not to think about Lindsay Lohan. Back in 2003, this film marked her transition from child star to teenage icon, portraying a rebellious, punk-rock Anna with a natural comedic charm that made the scenes work beautifully. In this new installment, even though Lindsay doesn’t have quite the same comedic spotlight, she feels fresh and genuinely happy in the role—a relief and a joy for those of us who watched her grow up.

The story picks up 20 years later, with Anna now an adult working in the music industry and facing the tricky dynamics of a blended family with teenage kids who don’t get along. The famous body-swap plot, which defines the franchise, now involves four characters instead of just two—adding a more playful and fresh twist to the classic family conflict.

While it’s not a masterpiece and doesn’t surpass the original in certain technical aspects, Another Freaky Friday has that fun, nostalgic spirit that makes it truly enjoyable. It’s also full of clever nods to the previous movie and other pop culture references—like a wedding date that pays homage to Mean Girls, or Anna’s wardrobe, which is a more fashionable take on Lindsay’s iconic 2003 look.

One area for improvement is the music. The original featured unforgettable pop-punk tracks, while this sequel’s soundtrack is more forgettable. Still, that doesn’t overshadow what the main leads bring to the table—they carry the comedic weight and keep us hooked.

And yes, Chad Michael Murray is back as Jake, which sparked a cheer during the premiere and adds an extra dose of nostalgia for fans of the era.

In short, if you grew up with Lindsay Lohan and the original Freaky Friday, this sequel will give you more than a few smiles. You’ll leave the theater with a warm feeling, seeing that Lindsay has made a comeback and remains relevant in Hollywood. Don’t expect a flawless production, but do expect an entertaining, fresh film made with genuine love for the ’90s and 2000s universe we cherish.
